George Webber, M.D. - Breast Surgeon
Dr. Webber received his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis, TN. His internship was served at Brooke Army Hospital at Fort Sam Houston, TX, followed by a 4-year surgical residency at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, TX. He completed 9 years of active duty in the U.S. Army and then moved to private practice in Knoxville, TN. His military career continued as an Air Force Reservist for the TN Air National Guard until just recently, and he is now in the retired Air Force Reserve.
Dr. Webber is a board-certified general surgeon and a Fellow of the American
College of Surgeons. He has performed general surgery in the Knoxville area
since 1975. In 1998, Dr. Webber decided to pursue his strong interest in breast
disease by devoting all of his professional practice to breast treatment,
performing therapeutic and diagnostic surgery. His surgical office is at the
Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center, and operates at several area hospitals.
Dr. Webber’s philosophy of treating breast cancer is early diagnosis, minimal
surgical treatment when feasible, and early return to normal activity.
Dr. Webber is a proponent of breast-conserving surgery because of its proven
effectiveness, and strives continually to use the latest technology in the
surgical treatment of breast disease. He is one of the first and few surgeons in
the Knoxville area who is trained and experienced in doing sentinel node
biopsies, which allow women to avoid the risk of full axillary dissection which
can result in lymphedema or swelling of the arm.
Dr. Webber is experienced in the use of ultrasound to identify breast lesions in
the operating room. This technique is referred to as intra-operative ultrasound.
It is used to find non-palpable lesions in the operating room, reducing the need
for hookwire localization. Dr. Webber was the first surgeon in Knoxville to use
this technique.
Diagnostic techniques for intraductal diseases includes ductal lavage and
intra-ductal biopsy (www.intraductalbiopsy.net) which is finding disease inside
the ducts of the breast by examining through the nipple and sampling the
abnormal areas. Some diseases, including ductal carcinoma in situ (a type of
early breast cancer), are being found before the mammogram or ultrasound shows
cancer or benign changes inside the breast ducts. Dr. Webber is presently the
only surgeon doing these procedures in Knoxville, and one of few in the country.
Pain control post operationally is another topic of breast care that concerns
Dr. Webber. Dr. Webber utilizes new technology which reducing the need for
narcotics. A simple infusion pump instills local anesthetic into the wound for 3
days after the breast surgery. Dr. Webber uses the On-Q system by I-Flow
(www.askyoursurgeon.com) to alleviate the pain. Most patients are pain free
without narcotics or pain pills and start normal activity within hours.
Dr. Webber has and continues to be a leader in breast surgery, allowing for the
best possible care of breast cancer victims. He is dedicated to helping his
patients overcome breast cancer, getting them on the road of recovery, and make
that transition from breast cancer victim to breast cancer survivor.
