Core Biopsy

This is a procedure in which a small nick is made in the skin after local anesthetic is administered. A needle is then placed into the breast and positioned so that the tip of the needle is centered in the lump or mass. Ultrasound is often used to assure the correct location of the needle. Once in position, the biopsy part of the needle is activated and a sharp click is heard. The needle is then withdrawn. This part of the procedure may be repeated a number of times in order to obtain an adequate sample to send to the pathologist.
