Knoxville, TN…Mission Accomplished! The 6th Annual Mission: Mammography event provided 107 free mammograms for women without insurance at Knoxville Center Mall on Thursday, October 14th in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Presenting sponsors of the event are WIVK and Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center.
The 107 free screenings were done on the KCBC mobile mammography unit at Knoxville Center. The women were from 26 cities in Tennessee: Athens (2), Blaine (2), Dandridge (5), Decatur (1), Friendsville (1), Jefferson City (1), Knoxville (69), Kodak (2), LaFollette (1), Lenoir City (2), Luttrell (3), Maryville (1), Maynardville (2), Morristown (1), New Market (1), Newport (1), Oliver Springs (1), Philadelphia (1), Riceville (1), Rogersville (1), Sevierville (2), Seymour (1), South Pittsburgh (1), Strawberry Plains (2), Vonore (1), and Walland (1). Michele Cabe drove 7 hours from Sandersville, Georgia because the law firm she works at does not offer insurance. There were 105 women who had no insurance and 2 had insurance with high deductibles who could not afford a mammogram. Thirteen women had never had a mammogram, 52 years old was the average age of the women and 53 women were repeats from last year. “I have been to all six Mission Mammography events,” said Kay Breeden. “I want to thank everyone who made this possible because I have no insurance and would not be able to afford a mammogram.” All of the 107 screenings have been read by KCBC’s clinical breast radiologists and 24 of the mammograms detected results that were suspicious which will need further evaluation. “Annual mammograms can detect cancer early which does save lives,” said Dr. Kamilia Kozlowski, CEO of Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center. “The Mission Mammography event is our opportunity to give back to the community.” Other sponsors of the event were Knoxville News Sentinel, Simon Malls, Chick-Fil-A, Food City, Hardee’s, Krispy Kreme and Panera Bread. Mission: Mammography is funded by the non-profit Kim Rowden Breast Cancer Memorial Fund. Donations can be made to the fund by calling 865-584-0291.
