The value of MRI screening in high-risk patients April 17, 2007—Knoxville, TN A recent large scale study of women at high risk for breast cancer (Radiology Volume 242: Number 3 - March 2007) confirms earlier studies that adding MRI to the screening regimen detects otherwise unsuspected breast cancers. The sensitivity of MRI alone was higher than other modalities and the positive predictive value approached that of ultrasound. In this study, 18 of 278 women with a high familial risk for breast cancer were found to have a breast cancer. MRI was the only modality showing 6 of the cancers in these 18 patients (some had more than one cancer). This study and others are uncovering the value of MRI screening in high-risk patients. return back
