09.06.06 - 2nd Annual Mission: Mammography Event Offers 107 Free Mammograms

Knoxville, TN…In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, WIVK and Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center will host the second annual Mission: Mammography event. Free screening mammograms will be offered by the KCBC Mobile Unit to women over 40 on a first come basis on Thursday, October 19 from 7:00 am until 8:00 pm at Knoxville Center Mall Ruby Tuesday’s entrance.

The KCBC Mobile Unit will do free screenings for the first 107 women in line who qualify for a mammogram. They will be given an appointment time for a screening only on Thursday. The qualifications are no implants, lumps, cysts or pain. No insurance is needed. Knoxville Center and Chick-Fil-A will provide complimentary coffee and donuts while women wait.

WIVK’s personality Allison will broadcast live at the mall from 7:00 am until 10:00 am with WIVK the Frog. Free WIVK T-shirts will be given to the women who get a mammogram. Mammography can detect breast cancer up to two years before it can be found by a self exam. “We hope that women who have never had a mammogram will take advantage of this great opportunity, particularly women without insurance,” said Andrew Gitschlag, KCBC Administrator and founder of the event, “Out of the 107 women screened last year, thirteen had suspicious results which required further diagnostic tests.”

Mission: Mammography is funded by the Kim Rowden Breast Cancer Memorial Fund which was founded by KCBC to assist women without financial resources for breast cancer screenings. The non-profit fund is administered by the Baptist Health System Foundation.

Co-sponsor Mike Hammond said, “We at Citadel Broadcasting hope that women in our community will take advantage of such an incredible resource offered by KCBC.”
