12.03.2004 - Kamilia Kozlowski, M.D. receives “E” Award for Economic Excellence & Equity in Business/Medicine

Dr. Kamilia Kozlowski, Medical Director and Clinical Breast Radiologist at the Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center (KCBC), was awarded at the The Tennessee Economic Council for Women, a group created by the One Hundredth General Assembly to address the economic concerns and needs of women in Tennessee, presented the first “E” Awards (Economic Excellence and Equity awards). This award recognizes women from across Tennessee who have distinguished themselves in a specific field or life commitment that has contributed to improving the lives of girls and women in Tennessee. Andrea Conte, the First Lady of Tennessee, presented Dr. Kamilia Kozlowski, Founder and Medical Director of the Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center (KCBC), the “E” award in the category of business (women-owned, health care, entrepreneurship) for exceptional leadership and major accomplishments in inspiring the success of women and girls.

Dr. Kozlowski founded the Breast Center in 1983, due to her concern about the insensitivity that women faced regarding their fragmented breast health care. At that time, she introduced state of the art film screen mammography, and within 18 months all facilities in East Tennessee updated their Xerox mammographic machines to film. Dr. Kozlowski has been a leader and innovator since the beginning. She helped to create a new radiological specialty, Clinical Breast Radiology; developed an innovative breast health care delivery system—providing a one-stop “shopping” for diagnostic breast services; and in 1986 began one of the first mobile mammography programs in the country to provide screening mammograms to women in under served areas. Currently, KCBC has direct capture digital mammography, ultrasound units, the area’s only dedicated breast MRI machine, and needle biopsies can be perform the day of the visit. KCBC consists of two Clinical Breast Radiologists, the area’s only dedicated breast surgeon, medical oncologists, reconstructive surgeons, and a high-risk assessment counselor.

In describing her vision for the potential of women in Tennessee, Dr. Kozlowski says, “women in Tennessee must always be visionary. Despite any obstacles that lie before them, women must never cease to dream and to dare—dare the potential within them to become a living reality.”
